Orthomolecular medicine
The term ‘orthomolecular’ was first used by Linus Pauling in his seminal article, Orthomolecular Psychiatry, published in the journal Science, 1968.
Orthomolecular medicine, as conceptualized by Pauling and established through Abram Hoffer, aims to restore the optimum environment of the body by correcting molecular imbalances on the basis of individual biochemistry.
Prof. Dr. Linus (Carl) Pauling (1901-1994) was an American chemist, biochemist, chemical engineer, and peace activist. He was awarded the Nobel price in (bio)chemistry for his research in complex biochemical structures in molecules (- which enabled later Watson & Crick to find the DNA-structure).
In 1941, at age 40, Pauling was diagnosed with chronic nephritis, a renal disease.
Following the recommendations of Thomas Addis, (Scottish MD/scientist,1881-1949), Pauling was able to control the disease with Addis's then-unusual low-protein salt-free diet and vitamin supplements. So Pauling's initial exposure to the idea of treating some special diseases with vitamin supplements was positive.
In 1965, Pauling read Niacin Therapy in Psychiatry by Abram Hoffer (Canadian MD, psychiatrist and biochemist, 1917-2009) and theorized vitamins might have important biochemical effects unrelated to their prevention of associated deficiency disease.
Pauling coined the term "orthomolecular" to refer to the practice of varying the concentration of substances normally present in the body to prevent and treat disease. His ideas formed the basis of orthomolecular medicine.
Treatment with micronutrients
After a blood analysis to determine if a deficiency in certain micronutrients exists, such as vitamins or dietary minerals (because of certain diseases or certain increased needs), a patient would get an personalized treatment with certain nutrient supplements or injections for a predetermined period.
Note:
- The use of nutrient supplements could not replace a healthy diet.
- Orthomolecular medicine is not advised as the only therapy in serious diseases,
however it could be used as complementary treatment.
Warning: There could be contra-indications for using high doses of micro nutrients, like kidney diseases, allergies, etc. – Check first with your doctor
